Defend against a flood
Floods can have a severe impact when they occur but our decisions can make a difference to the impact that floods can have.
This activity recreates a river valley within a mixed urban and rural landscape. People are invited to place buildings to represent a town and place flood gates and defences to protect the town from a flood. They can then simulate a flood and see the results of these choices and the consequences they have for the whole landscape.
Key learning here will be that protecting one area from a flood can cause another area to flood and that planning decisions can lessen the effects of flooding. Techniques for flood prevention, including Natural Flood Management, will be discussed to explain that there isn’t a single solution to the problem but a variety of choices and consequences.
